Tomahawks are a traditional hunting weapon of the native american indians. Today we use these to encourage discipline and skill in our young people, with an emphasis on safety and target sports. We throw tomahawks and throwing angels – the angels are much smaller and easier to throw, which makes them much more suitable for Cubs and even younger. Tomahawks are small axes which are much more difficult to throw, requiring more strength and skill, so we reserve these for our Scouts and older sections.
Tomahawk throwing is a great skill to have. There is a lot of satisfaction in hitting the target in a consistent manner, and there is much more to do to hone your skills once you’ve mastered the first throwing step. It can also be dangerous for novices, and we ensure that every tomahawk instructor has completed training under the KATTA governing body. We also drum into every young person that tomahawk throwing is a target sport only, and we never allow them to target images of animals or humans.
