Clitheroe and District

Our Group isn’t alone in Scouting. There is a whole network of other Scouts out there.

1st Clayton-le-Moors Scout Group is part of a much larger organisation. The Scout District of Clitheroe includes six Scout Groups from Baxenden, Oswaldtwistle, Gt Harwood, Accrington, and of course, Clayton-le-Moors. This network of Groups allows us to take part in more activities and competitions, and to share skills and experience across a wider range of young people and volunteers.

There are approximately 400 young people in Clitheroe. The Groups are:

  • 1st Clitheroe
  • St Michael and St John’s Clitheroe (Loyola)
  • St Mary Magdalene’s
  • Edisford & Low Moor
  • St Paul’s
  • Whalley Guide and Scout Group
  • St Leonard’s Langho
  • 1st Gt Harwood (Parish)
  • 1st Ribchester (St Wilfrid’s)
  • 1st Clayton-le-Moors (All Saints)

Each of these has a variety of Sections, and each has a team of volunteers to run them.

In addition the District operates three Explorer Scout Units, Cookie Monsters, Grumpy Explorers and Smiley Explorers, and a Scout Network. The District is managed by the District Lead Volunteer who is supported by a small team of volunteers and a Board of Trustees. All appointments within the District or Groups are made by the Appointments Team within the District, who also ensure that training is up to date and awards are presented.

East Lancashire County

There are other Scout Districts, and these are, in turn, organised into Scout Counties. Clitheroe and District belongs to East Lancashire County, along with Blackburn, Darwen, Rossendale, and Burnley & Pendle. The County is managed by a County Lead Volunteer, who again is supported by a team of volunteers and a County Board of Trustees. The County provides adult training, among other things, and is the owner of Bowley Scout Campsite and Activity Centre, which is located in Gt Harwood.

Regional and Beyond

The structure continues further, with East Lancashire County belonging to the Northwest Region, then to England, and then to The Scout Association. The HQ for UK Scouting is Gilwell in London. Among the volunteers at Gilwell are the majority of the paid staff for The Scout Association, who support Groups like us with insurance, training, legal support, branding, programme support, and development of Scouting. Safeguarding issues are dealt with here, and
