Archery is among a number of target sports that Beavers, Cubs and Scouts regularly practise. Target sports are individual activities, where a young person can practise the mental and physical skills necessary to become a top marksman. They are also loads of fun, and can be competitive if the young people want them to be. Other target sports include Air Rifles, Air Pistols, Crossbows, and Catapults.
We keep our young people extra safe during archery instruction by training everybody in general range rules and ensuring that only qualified instructors are permitted to lead these sessions. Scouts are only permitted to shoot at targets, and not at images of animals or people, and this is something that is engrained deeply into every Scout, that archery is a target sport only.
The qualification needed to instruct in Archery is an Archery GB National Governing Body qualification, plus a Scouting activity permit.
4 Week Challenge
If you’d like to volunteer with us, but you aren’t sure if you want to commit, then don’t worry. We offer a 4-Week Challenge for new volunteers, with no obligation beyond that.
Week 1 – Come and see us at whichever section you think you’d be interested in. Observe, join in if you like, have a chat with the other volunteers and young people.
Week 2 – Come again, armed with the knowledge that you’ll be lending a hand and joining in with the activities. This is going to be the most fun you’ve had in a long time!!
Week 3 – If you’re up for it, we’ll give you a task to plan and carry out. This might be to run a game or simple activity, or anything else that you’re comfortable with giving a go. This could well be the scariest thing you’ll ever do, but could also be the most rewarding.
Week 4 – Crunch time! If you’re still interested, then we’ll have a chat about the past few weeks and how you feel about where you want to be. Congratulations! You just volunteered!!
