Volunteer

The best way to boost your confidence, skills and employability while having fun.

Everybody in 1st Clayton-le-Moors is a volunteer. There are more than you might think – behind the scenes of the weekly pack meeting are trustees who make sure everything is provided, treasurers who handle the accounts, handymen who fix the drains, activity instructors who teach the young people to throw an axe, managers who encourage the other volunteers, and countless others.

And then, of course, you have the volunteers at the forefront of it all – the ones who are delighted when a Cub ties their first clove hitch, or get excited when the Beavers go to the zoo, or tired after a weekend hiking with the Scouts. Everybody is valuable, and everybody gives just whatever time, skills or resources that they can afford.

We are growing, rapidly, and we need more volunteers. We don’t need you to be an expert in anything at all, although if you are we’d love to meet you too. We just want you to be passionate about giving the young people a worthwhile experience in Scouting, in whatever way you can do best.

This page will point you in the direction of lots of information relating to volunteering at 1st Clayton-le-Moors. Please take the time to have a look and find out the questions you never knew to ask…

What can I do?

If you have any questions about how you can get involved, then please email, ring, message, or talk to any volunteer at all. They’ll all point you towards the right person to speak to, or they’ll answer your questions. For an idea of the roles that you might be able to do, take a look at our current vacancies page. Here you can see we have roles from fundraiser to activity assistant to camp cook to trustee of the board. Whatever you want to do, you can get involved with us.

How can I Join?

You can call us, email us, write a letter and pin it to our door, or you can even fill out our special Adult Volunteer Application Form. Whichever way you do it, expect a chat with one of our volunteers to see what it involves and the best way to join.

What does it Involve?

After you have expressed an interest in a volunteering role, the Group Lead Volunteer will contact you for an informal chat. Nothing is binding, and you can walk away whenever you like, but we’d love it if you’d take it a step further!

When you’ve made a decision that volunteering in a particular role is what you want to do, and you’ve either talked it over or visited the Section a few times to make sure (or taken our 4 Week Challenge!), we will start the process to appoint you formally.

The Group Lead Volunteer will explain how Scouts works, discuss the time you have available, agree on tasks, share the safe scouting cards, and outline the learning you’ll need to complete. All new volunteers also have to complete key vetting and safeguarding checks.

Our digital tools support volunteers, tracking their progress and showing the steps to be completed. If someone is new to My Membership, or logging in and joining for the first time, they can access the quick start guide to help them through

Read our steps on Welcome to the Team for more information on the steps to become a full member.

Is there anything I need to do first?

We do need to do a few quick tasks to make sure that everybody is kept safe. This includes a Criminal Record check, references, signing a Declaration, and Safety and Safeguarding training. Take a look at our page on Keeping our Young People Safe for more info.

Membership Systems

Once you’ve joined us you will find that there are many different online systems to get to grips with. It’s not actually all that bad, but for a clear picture, take a look at our page on our Membership Systems.

What do I wear?

Young people and adults tend to wear uniform at Scouts. You can see what this is, and how to apply for your own uniform, on our page on Volunteer Uniform.

How much will it cost me?

We don’t expect any of our volunteers to spend a penny to give up their time with us. Even though it is hugely beneficial to both the young people and adults, everything at Scouts is free for our volunteers. Take a look at our page on Expenses for more info.

I don’t know what to do?

You don’t need to know a thing. We will provide free training on every aspect, but we will also accept any expertise you do happen to have!

There is a certain amount of mandatory training, but after that it’s up to you. You can go as far as you like in your Scouting journey.

Who else is in Scouting?

There is a whole structure of Scouting, both above and below the Group at 1st Clayton-le-Moors. Our page describing the Structure of Scouts Locally is very useful in laying out the structure.

Is there anything else I need to know?

If you’re interested in reading up on how Scouting works, and how we do things in our Group, you may want to take a look at our Group Policies page. Everything that we do is in accordance with these policies and the more general Scouts Policy, Organisation and Rules.
